Alliance for Global Health & Science

Alliance for Global Health & Science
Overview

Collaborative Research for Global Impact

The Alliance for Global Health & Science creates partnerships between UC Berkeley and leading African research institutions to tackle shared global health challenges. By connecting Berkeley's research infrastructure with established African scientific expertise, we generate discoveries and solutions that neither could achieve alone.

Our collaborative model addresses infectious diseases that affect communities worldwide—from COVID-19 and malaria to emerging threats like mpox and antimicrobial resistance. Through joint research projects, training programs, and ongoing partnerships, we're building a network of researchers equipped to respond to current challenges and prevent future health crises.

Impact

Research Excellence

  • 52 peer-reviewed publications produced by 8 PhD and Master's students with Berkeley faculty mentorship
  • Workshop participants secured prestigious Fogarty and Wellcome Trust awards
  • Uganda's first COVID-19 diagnostic testing center established, processing over 1 million tests

Capacity Building

  • Over 200 students trained through summer workshops
  • 24 UC Berkeley students participated in international collaborative research
  • Enhanced research infrastructure and biotechnology innovations at partner institutions

Sustainable Partnerships

  • Ongoing research collaborations between UC Berkeley and African university faculty
  • External grants and funding secured by partner researchers
  • Cross-cultural scientific exchange benefiting all participants

Our Partners: Makerere University - School of Biomedical Sciences and MakBRC

Makerere School of Biomedical Sciences

The Makerere University School of Biomedical Sciences (MakSBS) is one of four schools within the College of Health Sciences at Uganda's oldest university, with a vision to be a leading institution for academic excellence and innovation in health sciences in Africa. The school conducts research across multiple areas including tuberculosis (through its MDRTBTx-Monitor project) and houses several research entities including the Makerere Biomedical Research Centre. CEND partners with Makerere through the Alliance for Global Health and Science, collaborating on capacity-building initiatives such as the computational biology workshops in Kampala that strengthen research capabilities at this key East African institution.

MakBRC - Makerere University Biomedical Research Centre

The Makerere University Biomedical Research Centre (MakBRC) is a Center of Excellence wholly owned by Makerere University that provides state-of-the-art laboratory services, biobanking, research training, and grants management—notably serving as the second facility in Uganda approved for COVID-19 testing during the pandemic. MakBRC was established through a grant from President Museveni in recognition of the exceptional work done during the COVID-19 response, which was supported by CEND's Alliance for Global Health and Science.
