In collaboration with the Berkeley Population Center, CEND has co-sponsored the "Population Biology and Ecology of Infectious Diseases" Seminar Series that kicked off this past Spring Semester. The series aims to build a vibrant, interdisciplinary community of scholars engaged in understanding infectious disease dynamics across biological, ecological, and social scales. By bringing together researchers from diverse backgrounds, the series seeks to encourage collaboration, spark new ideas, and advance innovative approaches to pressing global health challenges.
The seminars feature a mix of informal, works-in-progress presentations from students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty, providing a supportive space for feedback and discussion. These are complemented by talks from invited external speakers who have shared insights about cutting-edge research and practice in the field and internationally. Together, these sessions are designed to promote both intellectual exchange and community-building across departments, from Demography to Integrative Biology to Public Health. Past talks have included: "Understanding the Role of Sociodemographic Disparities in Shaping Respiratory Disease Dynamics", "Data aggregation and mechanistic modeling enable dose-response analysis of SARS-CoV-1 in non-human primates", "Mosquito-borne diseases in a warming world", and "Coevolution of phyllosphere bacteria and phage as a model for the evolution of multihost parasites".
Seminars take place every Friday from 12–1pm in Room 310 of the Social Sciences Building. Lunch is provided, and all are welcome to attend. If you are interested in attending, please email popbioseminar@berkeley.edu to be added to the mailing list.
