CEND It! with Benjamin Gilbert
By Claire Andrews, Graduate Student Intern

We were pleased to welcome Dr. Benjamin Gilbert for the June installment of "CEND It!"

Dr. Gilbert, Associate Adjunct Professor and Senior Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, presented his research on podoconiosis, a neglected non-infectious disease that primarily affects people living in regions with volcanic soils. Although the disease has long been associated with environmental exposure, the mechanisms underlying its development remain incompletely understood. His talk explored a leading hypothesis that microscopic rod-shaped silica particles found in volcanic soils may penetrate the skin and contribute to disease pathogenesis. Dr. Gilbert discussed ongoing efforts to investigate how these particles interact with the body, including questions about whether their uptake occurs through passive exposure or active biological processes.

The presentation showcased how geochemistry, environmental science, and public health can come together to address complex global health challenges. The talk sparked thoughtful discussion about disease causation, environmental exposures, and the interdisciplinary approaches needed to better understand neglected diseases.

We thank Dr. Gilbert for sharing his work and all attendees for their questions and participation.
